LANDSCAPING

LANDSCAPING ROCK GARDENS

Building a good rock garden requires the selection of well shaped local rock, placed in natural groupings as if they had always been part of the original landscape.  Sloping ground can be effectively terraced and steps incorporated for access.

Planting low, mass planted groundcovers can create miniature landscapes, and taller more upright plants towards the rear can backdrop the garden and add structure.

LANDSCAPING POOLS & WATER FEATURES

A pool should address a clients’ needs and their relationship with their garden.

Good design will also ensure the pool is well integrated with the surroundings, and that reflection, colour, shape and size create sufficient impact. Inclusion of water features – in pools and on their own, follow the same principles with the addition of drama and movement.

LANDSCAPING COASTAL GARDENS

The harsh environment of the seaside limits the plant pallet to a small number of hardy low growing native and introduced species.  These are best used en masse with sweeps of texture and colour leading the eye to the water and open spaces.

Use trees such as the pohutukawa, and cordyline for framing views and flax, griselinia, pseudopanax and olearia varieties add structure.

LANDSCAPING OUTDOOR LIVING

The outdoor room is a natural extension of the house and is also reflection of the tastes of the client.  Ergonomics rule in these spaces – ease of movement, flexibility with the placement of furniture and making sure cooking areas within easy reach of the kitchen, are good rules to start with.

Shaded areas take full account of the moving sun and fireplaces positioned to replace the sun on dusk.
